Star Trek is as timeless and classic as a franchise or show can get, and over its very long lifespan, there have many iterations and pieces of work done, all taking place within the sci-fi universe.
The newest installment in Star Trek's main TV show lineage is the very divisive Star Trek: Discovery, a much more modern take on the classic Trek universe, and one that deviates heavily from the franchises classic and formula. With Discovery continuing into its third season, let's take a look at five reasons that's a good thing, and five reasons why it's not.
10 Need: Room For Change
Changing the formula from what most versions of Star Trek have followed thus far no doubt divided fans. Whether you're a fan of the style used in Discovery or not, growth in any show can always be a great thing, and Discovery could use it in some people's opinions.
There is a lot of room for this growth as well, with some great characters, even better visuals and effects, and an endless universe of possibilities to play with, giving this show a good reason to continue.
9 Don't: Try Again?
Whether you love Discovery or can't stand it, there is no denying the huge change in style and production direction comparative to nearly every other Star Trek show.
Discovery has no doubt taken a huge step in a new direction for the long-living sci-fi franchise, but many would agree that it wasn't exactly one of the best steps the cinematic universe has taken. With a new show on the horizon, and talks of a new and very different Star trek movie being possibly made, perhaps its time to end Discovery and try taking a different direction.
8 Need: The Fans
Discovery hasn't exactly been the most popular show in the Star Trek universe, but there are plenty of old school and hardcore fans who still love the show, and most Star Trek fans who aren't fans or even dislike the show don't even hate it.
Letting the show continue on is a service to not only the staff and crew of the show itself, but more than anything, from the Trekkies who watch every single piece of Trek they can get there hands-on, to even the newcomers, who perhaps haven't even seen a Star Trek show until Discovery.
7 Don't: Too Different
While making such a major change to the direction of Trek in Discovery was bold and creative in ways, some might argue that its a bit too off-brand, not following some key stylistic choices that to many, make Star Trek what it is.
This is very similar to the more recent set of Star Trek Movies, which divided fans as well, but was widely considered to be too adrift from the Trek style. While there are a large portion of fans out there hope for more changes in future Star Trek stories, many would agree these large changes have been quite negative over the past few years.
6 Need: More Stories to Tell
Star Trek Discovery hasn't been going on very long, and with some of the major plotlines splitting fans down the middle, there is always room to try out something new within the show.
There's more than enough justification to see the characters grow further, to see more adventures, and to see more Star Trek content being made in general. With such an utter vast universe of ideas to play with, there should be no shortage of opportunities to tell a good tale.
5 Don't: Worst to Date?
While to some this may seem like quite a harsh assessment to make, it could easily be argued that Star Trek: Discovery is the worst of the Star Trek TV shows to date.
While reviews of the show itself aren't particularly bad, more than a handful of fans have given the show negative critiques, with huge the huge stylistic and changes and differences in writing being some of the most common reasons why. Even the shortly lived Star Trek: Enterprise didn't seem to be quite as divisive as the latest show.
4 Need: Picard is Coming
If there was a worldwide Star Trek character popularity contest, it wouldn't be an unsafe bet at all to say that Jean-Luc Picard would have great odds at taking first place. And well deserved, as Patrick Stewart has always delivered amazing performances as the iconic Star Trek captain, using morality, logic, and insight to solve great problems and defeat even great enemies.
There is no doubt the character has been highly missed, and with the upcoming show connecting the beloved Star Trek: Enterprise with Discovery, there are more reasons to keep this show around.
3 Don't: Picard is Coming
While having Picard on the way could no doubt be a good thing for Discovery, it easily could be just the opposite. It could negatively impact the show, but at the same time, it could provide a gracious and perhaps needed exit for the Discovery show in general.
With high hopes for Picard and a potentially huge fanbase, Picard could easily overshadow Discovery, stealing its thunder and possibly it's fans, or even just make it look worse by comparison. With the two shows forming connections, perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to end the Discovery iteration.
2 Need: Close it Out
While three seasons may be short, if you aren't particularly feeling Star Trek: Discovery, but don't hate it, perhaps this is a sentiment you would agree with. Give the show one last season, and a close it out with a bang.
As mentioned earlier, Picard is on the way, and the torch can be passed on so to speak, continuing the franchise. One last season can wrap up everything and give the show a proper send-off rather than a cliff hanger or inconclusive ending.
1 Don't: It Won't Change
While many might want to see Star Trek: Discovery change for the better, or grow in a positive way, the truth is, odds are it just won't.
The show seems to have followed through with its style with little diversions, and the Star Trek: Short Treks seems to take any interesting creativity the universe has for its own, leaving Discovery feeling bland. With another season likely to follow suit, perhaps it's time to just call it on this series.
